Read the following sentences and notice the underlined words.

The word friend denotes one friend.
The word friends denotes more than one friend.
The words that denote one person / thing / place are said to be in singular form.

In the second sentence, the word ‘He’ is used in place of ‘Raju’.

In the fourth sentence. ‘It’ is used in place of ‘baby’.
The words ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘It’ are used in the place of names of persons. So they are said to be ‘personal pronouns’.

The underlined symbols are called full stops. (.)
The symbol full stop (.) is used in writing at the end of a sentence. We have to pause for a while after this symbol while reading.
Now read the following by giving a pause at the end of every sentence.
Raju did not want to lose the opportunity. He decided to cook. But suddenly he fainted.

Uses of ‘Can’ and ‘May’ :
Observe the following sentences from the lesson.
1. “May I join you?” said the mixer.
Yes ! You may.
2. “Can I help you?” said the stove.
Yes! You can. “You are most welcome”, said the recipe book.
In these two sentences ‘Can’ and ‘May’ are used to ask for permission. If we want to ask permission, we should use ‘Can’ or ‘May’.

How to play ?
Note to the teacher :
Divide the class into two groups.
Display some objects on the table like pen, bag, scale, pencil, eraser, book, pad, etc.
Ask a child from one group to pick an object (eg. pen) and let him / her ask “Can I use this pen?”.
Make a child from other group to answer “Yes you can” or “No you cannot?”
Encourage all the children to ask and answer the questions using ‘can and may’.

The Recipe Book
Once there lived a man named Raju. He owned a hotel everyone who came, liked the food. Raju, once got a bulk order to cook dinner for a party. But, he fell sick. Even though, he gained all his confidence and decided to cook.
But, suddenly he fainted. The Recipe book saw this. He talked to his friends.
He told about Raju and asked them for help. Firstly, the pot said, that it is big to prepare rice. Later on, the mixer was interested to join as it can grind things.
And then, the knife came as it slices the vegatables. Finally, the stove came and asked them for its participation. The recipe book welcomed it and they began cooking.
All the dishes were ready. And when Raju woke up, he was surprised to see the food. When he tasted, they were all delicious. Realising that all this was done by recipe book, he said, ‘who helped you in cooking’? Then, the recipe book pointed at all his friends. At last, Raju thanked all of them.

అనగనగా రాజు అనే వ్యక్తి ఉండేవాడు. అతను ఒక చిన్న హెూటల్ కి యజమాని. అక్కడకి వచ్చే వారందరికీ, భోజనం ఎంతో బాగా నచ్చేది. ఎంతో రుచిగా ఉండేది. ఒకసారి రాజుకి ఒక పార్టీకి భారీ స్థాయిలో వంటకాలు చేయవలసి వచ్చింది. కాని అతని ఆరోగ్యం సహకరించలేదు. అయినాసరే, తాను చేయగలనని సిద్ధపడుతాడు. కాని ప్రయోజనం ఏమి లేదు. చక్కెరతో కింద పడ్డాడు. ఇదంతా చూసిన వంటల పుస్తకం, వంట తయారికీ ఎవరైనా ముందుకు వస్తారా ? అని అడిగింది.
అప్పుడు తన స్నేహితులైన కుండ, మిక్సీ, చాకు మరియు పొయ్యి, ఒక్కొక్కటిగా ముందుకు వచ్చాయి. వాటి పని అవి చేసాయి. చివరికి, అన్నీ కలిసి ఎంతో రుచికరమైన వంటలను, ఆహారాన్ని సిద్ధం చేసాయి. నిద్రలేచిన రాజు ఇదంతా చూసి ఆశ్చర్యపోయాడు. వంటలను రుచి చూడగా, ఆవన్నీ ఎంతో మధురంగా ఉన్నాయి. ఇదంతా చేసింది వంటల పుస్తకమని తెలుసుకొని అందరికీ ధన్యవాదాలు తెలిపాడు.
