Summary:
Dhyan Singh was a solider in the Indian Army. He used to practice hockey in the moon light. So, his coach started to call him Dhyan Chand, where Chand means moon. On 15 August 1936, Olympics were held, in Berlin, Germany. The day before it, it rained and the ground was wet. The match started. Roop Singh scored the first goal. In the second half of the match, Indian team made three goals.Out of which two were by Dhyan chand. He removed his shoes as it was difficult. As the Indian team scored more, a German goal keeper pounced on Dhyan Chand to hurt him. He continued to play and made the last goal of the match. It was a hat-trick win for the Indian team. German ruler offered him higher Salary and rank in the German army, but he refused. Hitler also awarded him a special gold medal. So, every year August 29, Dhyan Chand’s birthday is being celebrated as National Sports Day in India. Hockey is our national sport.

ధ్యాన్ సింగ్ ఒక సైనికుడు. రోజులో సమయం లేక రాత్రివేళలో హాకీ ఆడడం సాధన చేసేవాడు. దాంతో అతని కోచ్, తనని ధ్యాన్ చంద్ అని పిలవసాగాడు. ఆగష్టు 15, 1936వ ఒలంపిక్ క్రీడలు జర్మనీ లోని బెర్లి లో నిర్వహించారు. ఆ ముందు రోజు భారీగా వర్షం పడడంతో ఆటస్థలమంతా తడిగా మారింది. అయినా అదే ఆఖరి రోజు కావడంతో వేరే మార్గం లేదు. ఆట మొదలైంది. రూప్ సింగ్ మొదటి గోల్ చేయగా, రెండో విడతలో భారత జట్టు మూడు గోల్ చేసింది.
అందులో రెండు ధ్యాన్ చంద్ సాధించాడు. తర్వాత భారత జట్టు జోరుగా దూసుకెళ్ళడంతో తట్టుకోలేక, జర్మనీ ఆటగాడు ధ్యాన్ చంద్ పై దాడిచేశాడు. కానీ ధ్యాన్ చంద్ సైనికుడు కావడంతో మళ్ళీ బాగా ఆడి చివరి గోల్ కూడా తనే సాధించి భారతజట్టును వరుసగా మూడోసారి గెలిపించాడు. జర్మనీ పాలకుడు ధ్యాన్ చంద్ కు మంచి జీతం, సైన్యంలో గొప్ప హెూదా కల్పిస్తానని అన్నాడు. కాని దాన్ని ధ్యాన్చంద్ తిరస్కరించాడు. హిట్లర్ కూడా అతనికి ప్రత్యేకమైన బంగారు పతకంతో సత్కరించాడు. హాకి భారతదేశపు జాతీయ క్రీడ. ప్రతి సంవత్సరం ఆగస్టు 29న ధ్యాన్ చంద్ పుట్టిన రోజును జాతీయ క్రీడల దినోత్సవంగా జరుపుకుంటాము.
