Read the following sentences and observe the underlined parts.

1. When the merchant was sleeping, someone entered his room quietly.
Here the underlined part of the sentence was sleeping denotes an action that continued in the past. This is known as the past continuous tense.
The personal pronoun ‘I’ and all singular forms take was + verb (ing) and all plural forms take were + verb (ing)

Now, look at the following examples of the use of the past continuous tense.

1. They were eating in the restaurant, when I met them.
2. The children were playing in the playground, when it rained last evening.
3. Vimala was watching T.V, when someone knocked at the door.
4. Geeta’s father met with an accident, while he was crossing the road.

In sentence one, the subject ‘He’ and the verb ‘is’ are both singular in form.
This means a singular verb has a singular subject. This is called agreement between the subject and verb.

In sentence two, the subject ‘we’ and the verb ‘are’ are both plural in form.
This means a plural verb has a plural subject. In this sentence also, you . can see the agreement between the subject and the verb.
Here are some examples of subject-verb agreement (the subject is in bold and the verb is underlined):

Activity – 12

Look at the underlined words, in the following sentences.

1. Birbal went to the merchant’s house.
The word merchant’s ends with ‘s (apostrophe and s). This indicates possession.

2. He is a clever person, isn’t he?
Here the apostrophe is not used to indicate possession. Instead it is used to indicate a shortened form. This is called contraction.
Here are some examples using apostrophe. Read and understand.
1. I went to my friend, Rama’s house yesterday.
2. Kannaiah has taken Sita’s pencil.
3. Varan doesn’t know how to play football.
4. They aren’t coming today.
5. Birbal saw the servant’s stick and shouted.

You may understand that an apostrophe (‘) is a punctuation mark. It can be used for possession and contracted forms.

Look at the examples in the table using apostrophe (‘) with nouns and in contracted forms.

Birbal Caught The Thief

Summary :

Once there lived a rich merchant in a small village, surrounded by a forest with many servants. One night, someone has stolen the merchant’s precious diamonds. The merchant asked all the servants about diamonds, but they denied. He went to the court of Akbar and narrated the incident. Akbar asked birbal to find his lost diamonds. Next day Birbal went to merchant’s house and asked all the servants, but everyone denied. Birbal gave equal sized sticks to all servants and said that it is a magic stick. He also said that the real thief stick will grow two inches by tomorrow.

And all should attend by tomorrow. The next day Birbal asked all the servants to show their sticks. One servant had the stick two inches shorter. Birbal took the servant to the merchant. Later, merchant asked Birbal that, how could he catch the thief. Birbal said that the thief cut the stick by two inc hes during night, fearing that the stick would grow by two inches longer. Birbal caught the thief wisely in this way.

సారాంశము

అనగనగా ఒక చిన్న ఊరిలో పెద్ద వ్యాపారి. తన పనిమనుషులతో కలిసి జీవిస్తూ ఉండేవాడు. ఒక రాత్రి, వ్యాపారి ఇంట్లోని వజ్రాలను ఒకతను దొంగలించాడు. వ్యాపారి నిద్రలేచిన తరువాత గమనించి తన పనిమనుషులను వజ్రాల గురించి అడిగాడు. కానీ ఎవరూ ఏమీ చెప్పలేదు. వ్యాపారి అక్బర్ దగ్గరకు వెళ్ళి జరిగింది అంతా వివరించాడు. అక్బర్, బీర్బల్ ను దొంగను వెతకడానికి నియమించాడు. మరుసటి రోజు బీర్బల్ వ్యాపారి ఇంటికి వెళ్ళి, అందరినీ వజ్రాల గురించి అడిగాడు. కానీ ఎవరూ ఏమీ చెప్పలేదు. బీర్బల్ పనిమనుషులందరికీ సమాన పొడవుగల కర్రలు ఇచ్చి, దొంగ కర్ర మరుసటి రోజుకు రెండు ఇంచులు పెరుగుతుంది అని చెప్పాడు. ఆ మరుసటి రోజుకు ఒకరి కర్ర రెండు ఇంచులు తగ్గుతుంది.

బీర్బల్ ఇది గమనించి దొంగ తనే అని గమనించాడు. దొంగ బీర్బల్ ను క్షమాపణ కోరాడు. బీర్బల్ దొంగను వ్యాపారికి అప్పగించాడు. వ్యాపారి బీర్బల్ ను దొంగను ఎలా కనిపెట్టాడో చెప్పమన్నాడు. అప్పుడు బీర్బల్, దొంగ మరుసటి రోజుకు కర్ర పెరుగుతుందేమో అని రెండు ఇంచులు కత్తిరించాడు, అని చెప్పాడు. ఇలా బీర్బల్ తన తెలివితో దొంగను పట్టుకున్నాడు.
