The word ‘Tenali Rama’ denotes the name of a person, the word ‘garden ‘denotes the name of a place and the word ‘box’ denotes the name of a thing. Such naming words are called nouns.

1. Read the words given in the box. Write them under the correct heading.
2. Read and observe the underlined words in the following sentences.
- Tenali Rama had a huge garden.
- He was a court jester in the court of King Sri Krishnadevaraya in the kingdom of Vijayanagaram.
In sentences 1 and 2, the words “Tenali Rama’, ‘Sri Krishnadevaraya’ and ‘Vijayanagaram’ are nouns and denote the names in particular. Such nouns are called ‘Proper Nouns’.
Proper Noun : A proper noun is the name of a particular person, a place or a thing. e.g. Geetha, Taj Mahal, Mahabharatha
Read and observe the underlined words in the following sentence.
The thieves rushed to the well to draw water.
In the above sentence the words ‘thieves’, ‘water’, ‘well’ denote nouns and are the names in general. Such nouns are called ‘Common Nouns’.
Common Noun : A common noun is the name of any person, place or thing that is of a common kind. e.g. : doctor, river, bag.

TENALI RAMA AND THE THIEVES
Tenali Rama was a court poet in the court of king Sri Krishnadevaraya. He was known for his wit and humour. He had a huge garden in his backyard.
One day, while he was watering his garden, Tenali Rama saw two thieves hiding in the bushes. The next minute, he went into his house. He shouted at his wife with a clever idea, ‘I heard that a gang of thieves have entered the city.
So we will keep all our valuables in the box and drop it in the well. Listening this, the thieves felt happy, but in contrast, Tenali Rama and his wife packed the box with stones and dropped it into the well.
In the night while the couple were sleeping, the thieves rushed and drew water from well throughout night. But they were shocked to see stones in it. They understood the plan, got scared and ran away.
తెనాలి రామకృష్ణ, శ్రీ కృష్ణదేవరాయల వారి ఆస్థానంలో ఉండే అష్టదిగ్గజ కవులలో ఒకరు. రామకృష్ణుడు అతని వివేకానికి మరియు చమత్కారానికి పేరు పొందినవారు. తెనాలి రామకృష్ణ, ఇంటి పెరట్లో పెద్ద మామిడి తోట ఉండేది. ఒక రోజు అతను మొక్కలకు నీళ్ళు పోస్తుండగా, పొదల్లో దొంగలు దాగి ఉండుట గమనించాడు.

ఇది విన్న దొంగలు ఎంతో సంతోషించి, ఆత్రుతగా ఎదురు చూసారు. కాని తెనాలి రామ మరియు అతని భార్య ఆ పెట్టెలో రాళ్ళను నింపి బావిలో వేసారు. వారు నిద్రించగానే, ఆ దొంగలు హుటాహుటిన వచ్చి ఆ రాత్రంతా బావిలో నీటిని తోడారు. కాని ఆ పెట్టెలో రాళ్ళను చూసి, వారు మోసపోయారని తెలుసుకొని పరుగులు తీసారు.
