→ Government of India Act -1935 was an important Act.

→ 292 members are elected from Provinces of British rule and 93 members from Princely States.

→ Draft constitution was prepared and submitted to the Constituent Assembly in 1948.

→ Brief background of the Indian Constitution :

  1. Before independence our country was ruled by the Britishers by making some Acts.
  2. The first Constitutional document was prepared by Motilal Nehru in 1929.
  3. In 1931, INC session at Karachi decided on how Independent India’s constitution look like.
  4. Elections to the Constituent Assembly was held in July 1946, accordingly. A Constituent Assembly was formed to prepare the Indian Constitution.
  5. 389 members were there in the Constituent Assembly.
  6. Babu Rajendra Prasad was elected as the President of the Constituent Assembly.
  7. Drafting Committee was set up to draft the constitution under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

→ The Preamble of the Indian Constitution :

  1. The Preamble is known as an introduction (or) index to the Indian Constitution.
  2. It sets out the goals, the values and the ideals and it is the basic structure of our constitution.
  3. The Preamble starts with We, the people of India
  4. There is a mention about Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic.
  5. There is a brief meaning of the terms Liberty,. Equality, Fraternity, Justice and Unity and Integrity.
  6. The Constitution was adopted on 26th Nov., 1949 and it came into force from 26th Jan., 1950.

→ Salient features of the Indian Constitution :

  1. Our Constitution comprises of many salient features like written constitution, Lengthiest written constitution, Fundamental Rights, Duties, Adult Franchise, Independent Judiciary, Rigid and Flexible constitution.
  2. Fundamental rights were mentioned from Articles 14 to 32 is part 3 of the Constitution.
  3. There is detailed discription of Right to Information Act and Right to Education.

→ Values and Responsible Citizenship :

  1. Values signify what is important and worthwhile.
  2. Values serve as the basis for moral codes and ethical reflection.
  3. A responsible citizen should inculcate the following values.
  4. Obey the Laws, Patriotism, Honesty.
  5. Responsibility, Respectfulness, Compassion.
  6. Tolerance, Courtesy, Self discipline, Moral Courage, Love of Justice etc.

→ Constitutional Amendment : A modification of the Constitution of a country.

→ Fraternity : Sense of brotherhood.

→ Province : It is an administrative divisioh in India during British rule.

→ Princely State : These were states of native rulers (kings) during the British Period.

→ Federal : Power is distributed between a central government and state government.
